This is an entertaining and thoughtful character novel which takes place in the industrial midlands (Sheffield) and London, England. Families intertwine...children grow up and lead "interesting" lives and the flavor of the steel and the mines seeps into the story and the people, lending a vague darkness to both the characters and the action without relying on contrived thrills or a nail-biting plot.

Full of history, politics, tradition and folk lore, this epic debut novel, The Seamstress by Frances de Pontes Peebles is simply a wonderful book! Time is fluid and dreamlike for Helen as she tries to make sense of the death of her young husband on an oil rig off the coast of Newfoundland. We are dragged through the past and hurled into the future by prose that is sparse and searing with patches of clarity and brightness like a maritime winter storm.
